The requirement for documents depends upon the parties of the court marriage. If the couple are both Nepali, the requirements of the document are different, and so on for the couple who are Nepali and Foreigner.

Firstly, we will discuss the necessary documents for court marriage between Nepali and Nepali.

Documents for Court Marriage in Nepal – For Nepali and Nepali

1. Citizenship

The citizenship of both partners is the first requirement to start the court marriage process in Nepal. If you have lost your citizenship, the document that indicates your identity like a license, the passport can be useful to start the process.

2. Unmarried/Single Certificate

It is the most important certificate for court marriage in Nepal. Unmarried/single certificate is taken from the ward office of permanent address. It is the certificate that verifies you are single/unmarried to the present date and is eligible to marry. This certificate must be taken by both the marrying parties.

It is not a compulsory document. If you are doing a court marriage process away from your home district then only this document is required. If you both are from the same home district and you are processing the court marriage from such district, there is no necessity for this document.

But other than the above condition, you need this document. For example, if your partner is from the Chitwan district and you are from the Kaski district but you want to process court marriage from the Kathmandu district court then you both need a temporary residence certificate.

If you are from the Kathmandu district and your partner is from the Chitwan district and if you are willing to process court marriage from the Kathmandu district court then you don’t need to make a temporary residence certificate as you already are a resident of Kathmandu but your partner needs a temporary residence certificate.

A minimum of 15 15-day stay certificate is required to do court marriage from the temporary certificate.

4. Witnesses

Any person who has Nepali citizenship can be a witness of your court marriage. Two witnesses are necessary to complete the court marriage process. Witnesses may be friends, relatives, or guardians. Witnesses must come to the court along with their original citizenship during the court marriage day.

5. Passport Size Photos

Both marrying parties are required to bring 4-4 passport-size photos each during the court marriage process.

6. Information

Both marrying parties are required to give the following information in the application form along with the above-mentioned documents:

If there is no embassy in the respective country, foreigners should contact the consulate office located in Nepal.
